I’ve been working with a new render engine called Iray. Same DAZ 3D software, but instead of using 3Delight to render it out, I’m using Iray. It uses a physics-based light engine. So the lights and shadows are supposed have a lot more realism to them. It’s pretty tricky stuff, but I think I’m getting the hang of it. My last render came out pretty good, but I wanted to play around some more and see if I could come up with some softer shadows.

I envisioned an art studio render a long time ago. I wanted to create a piece that featured a model being painted, and that you could see her being painted on canvas. Very rarely do I nail a render I sat down to create. I usually start with an idea, and then go off on a tangent and create something totally different. I think it came out amazing. When DAZ released Lilith 6 a few weeks back, I had to pass. She’s just not my type. So why did I buy Lilith? Because I got here for a mere $10 after redeeming a $6 DAZ coupon. That, and the fact that she’s back on promo pricing because of DAZ’s Platinum Club Anniversary sale. I didn’t bother with the Starter or Pro bundles, I just picked up the base figure so that I could take advantage of another character that I bought recently: Drucilla. I didn’t what this one to be nudity for the sake of nudity, so I want to try something new. I wanted to try and add some tattoos in post. I also wanted this to look sort of like a ‘60s / ‘70s vintage pinup, so I used some vintage filters to give it an aged look. I was pretty happy with the way that my last render came out. I had taken several renders with totally different light settings and stacked them up in Pixelmator using different layer settings and opacities. It was an interesting experiment. When it comes to post-work, I usually only add special effects, vignette, bokeh, etc. I usually do all the lighting in DAZ Studio. I’ve never thought to play with the lighting in post. Layering multiple renders makes for some interesting results. It’s something I wanted to explore some more.

I picked up some cool pirate outfits not too long ago. Since my wife and I just watched a Pirates of the Caribbean marathon, I thought it was appropriate to fire off a pirate-themed render. I guess it’s nice to take a break every now and then from sexy girls in skimpwear to try something new. Not that I mind sexy girls in skimpwear. I have to admit, this was a very involved and complicated scene. It took almost 2 weeks and about 30 renders before it was complete. I picked up the Millennium Dragon 2 last August when the price dropped to that which I couldn't refuse. However, I don't think I've done a single render with a dragon yet. DAZ 3D released some HD morphs and textures for Michael and Victoria today. They look amazing. It’s just unfortunate that they have to be purchased separately. You’d think at this point that this level of quality would be standard, but I guess DAZ has to make their money too. Not that I’m knocking the standard versions. Looking at renders of Michael 6 and Victoria 6, it’s hard to imagine that they could look any better.

I’m going to do a lot of side-by-side comparisons between the standard-issue M6 and V6 and the new HD versions. I was really pleased with the way that my first 3D graphic came out. I wanted to keep the ball rolling and jump straight into another one. I wanted the next one to be more elaborate than the first. The first image I did was more of a proof of concept. I used it to familiarize myself with the software and techniques. I've been wanting to get into 3D modeling for years but the software needed to do it is crazy expensive. I’d love to use Poser. It looks amazing, but it’s $300 bucks. I could never justify the $700 price tag for ZBrush either. I found DAZ Studio yesterday. It's amazing. And it's free! Their whole deal is to give you the software for free with the hopes that you'll buy content and plugins, etc. Sounds like a good business model because I can see myself getting hooked on this.]]>
